Public Service Award
Charles B. Snow, Class of 1966
1998 Recipient

Charles Snow's public service was a lifetime affair. While building a career in banking, mostly at Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, he gave selflessly of his time. Snow served his country from 1968 to 1970 in Vietnam. As a sergeant there, he lost his leg from a land mine explosion and received the Purple Heart for service. Upon return from Vietnam, Show used his experience to help others through leadership roles with the State Veteran's Outreach Program and Maine Job Service as well as Disabled American Veterans. Equally devoted to bettering his community, Snow served on Saco School Committee from 1979 to 1990 and was chairman for three years. He was also a past officer in several organizations, including Saco Bay Rotary Club, Saco Business Association, Maremont Little League and the Red Cross. His public service has been recognized with awards such as two-time Rotarian of the Year, the Paul Harris Fellowship, the Jack Gessemeyer award and the Service Above Self award. But his alma mater was one of his greatest beneficiaries. He was one of 21 people who, in 1988, reactivated the Thornton Alumni Association. During his tenure from 1988 to 1995 he served as treasurer for two years and, at one time or another, chair to four different committees. In 1992, Snow became a member of the Thornton Board of Trustees, and for three years served simultaneously on both boards. During his tenure on the Board of Trustees, he served on four board committees. At his untimely death in 1998, he was the board's assistant treasurer.
