A. William "Bill" Kany, Jr., Class of 1949
1999 Recipient

William Kany, Jr. has given of his talent, time and energy to improve our school, our community and beyond. Kany was co-chair of the Leadership Gift Committee, a member of the Steering Committee of the TA 200 & Beyond Campaign that raised over $2.7 million to build Thornton's newest facilities and TA annual fund chair. He also served on the Saco-Biddeford Aspiration Compact that started the Reach mentoring program for struggling Saco Middle School eighth graders, he was instrumental in starting and funding the joint day care center on Thornton's campus with Thornton Academy and Visiting Nurse Services and he is currently a member of the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees. Kany was president of Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution from 1985 to 1996, and served on its board of directors from 1972 to present and still serves as chairman of the board. He has been active on many community boards, including Sweetser Children's Services, Dyer Library/York Institute, the Biddeford-Saco Economic Development Corporation, Saco Economic Development Committee, Saco Business Association and the Chamber of Commerce. He is also a corporator at Southern Maine Medical Center and Maine Medical Center. Kany has also chaired a number of efforts, including Saco's Main Street '90 effort, Mary's Walk and the Saco Spirit for Business. Beyond our community, Kany has served as the chair of the Maine Community Bank Association. Most notably, Kany spearheaded the efforts to establish York County Technical College, working to help site the facility and chairing the committee to raise funds.
