2000 Recipient Helen Rankin Fisher's volunteerism spans 58 years. During World War II, as a student here at Thornton Academy, she was a ground observer for the U.S. Air Force. After Graduating from Bates College, she married and raised seven children, all Thornton Academy alumni. While the family traveled due to her husband's career, Fisher continued her volunteer work in such locations as Labrador, Louisiana and Thailand, working for the American Red Cross and a variety of other organizations. Since returning to Saco in 1974, Fisher has served in a wide variety of community service roles, including the following: American Red Cross, both as a volunteer and as executive director of the York County chapter, member of the Saco School Board for eight years, member of the Saco Planning Board for 10 years, secretary and vice president of the Saco/Biddeford/Old Orchard Beach Council of Churches, long-time volunteer and treasurer of the Biddeford/Saco Food Pantry, secretary of the Saco Conservation Commission, secretary of the Saco Republican Committee, board members and treasurer for Camp Laughing Loon for 25 years and CCD teacher at Most Holy Trinity Church. At Thornton Academy, Fisher has helped with the annual fund and has been active in organizing her class reunions and other activities. | ||||||||
