Wallace H. Nutting, Class of 1946 1996 Recipient, Public Service A retired four-star Army general, Wallace H. Nutting graduated from the U. S. Military Academy in 1950 and went immediately to Korea as a second lieutenant of cavalry. It was the first of many international posts. He served once in South America, twice in Vietnam and three times in Europe and had seven posts in the states. As he climbed through the ranks, Nutting furthered his education, attending Army, Navy and Joint Services colleges and earning a masters in international affairs from George Washington University. He took over the unified command of the U.S. Southern Command the day before the Panama Treaty was signed in 1979. As a senior fellow of the National Defense University (NDU), Nutting received the Lyman L. Lemnitzer Award at a ceremony held by the NDU at Fort McNair, near Washington, D.C. The award recognized his significant contributions in joint military operations. He was nominated by students in the university's Capstone program, a joint orientation course for leaders in different branches of the military. Nutting has taught in Central and South America, the Far East, throughout Europe and parts of the Middle East. | ||||||||
