Dr. Bina Sawyer, Class of 1941 1997 Recipient, Public Service The Alumni Association honors Dr. Bina Sawyer for her achievements on behalf of humanity. Since 1956 she has been a doctor in Burma and Thailand under the Board of International Missions. In Burma, she practiced pediatrics in a 200-bed hospital until the government forced foreign missionaries out in 1965. In Thailand she was in charge of a 10-bed hospital serving people in a 100-mile radius who spoke five different languages. In 1985 a new hospital was built serving 25 in-patients and 80 to 100 out-patients daily. During her tenure, she established and trained over 200 people under the Village Health Workers Training Program. She also started a mobile clinic that reached by foot to 34 villages spread 2 to 4 hours apart. Although she retired in 1992, she has returned to Thailand five times as a volunteer. She is a graduate of Syracuse University and Syracuse Medical School and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has attended Harvard School of Public Health and the Biblical Seminary of New York. She was the 1982 Distinguished Alumni of Syracuse Medical School. | ||||||||
