A success story

Thornton Academy recognizes that high school students navigate some of life's most difficult waters, some so turbulent that they cannot be overcome at the time. The challenges and dilemmas faced by some young people lead them to decide that their best - or even only - choice is to leave Thornton Academy before reaching graduation. Many of these students become successful and productive adults, with accomplishments that prove a level of personal growth that equals, and often exceeds, the growth required to graduate from Thornton Academy on schedule. Though not important to everyone, some of these adults deeply regret not having their Thornton diploma. The Alternative Diploma Program is Thornton's effort to recognize these alumni in a way that shows the genuine respect their accomplishments deserve.

The criteria for receiving a Thornton Academy diploma through the Alternative Diploma process are as follows:
  • The alumnus/a has not received another high school degree.
  • The alumnus/a attended Thornton Academy for at least one full school year.
  • The alumnus/a's original graduation date is at least ten years past.
  • The alumnus/a is a productive member of the community with the ability to show proof of fulfillment of Thornton Academy's mission of preparation for a changing world (i.e., to be a life-long learner).
Alumni wishing to receive a Thornton Academy diploma through the Alternative Diploma Program may complete a brief application and submit evidence of merit. Such evidence might include but is not limited to:
  • A general education degree (G.E.D.)
  • Military service with honorable discharge
  • Documented community service
  • Sponsorship or recommendation by community leaders or reputable employers
  • Completion of an apprenticeship or internship program
  • Career position of responsibility
  • Post-secondary academic course credit
If you or someone you know might qualify for the Thornton Academy Alternative Diploma Program, please contact Susan Tarver in the Admissions Office at Thornton Academy, (207) 282-3361, extension 202.
