The academic program at Thornton Academy is rigorous yet invigorating. In small classroom settings—averaging 22 students—all students share a common academic experience by fulfilling academic requirements in English, math, history, science, fine arts and wellness. Individually, each student can test his or her abilities by the variety course selections within the disciplines. Thornton also offers a full range of advanced placement and honors courses to challenge even the most advanced student. Likewise, students can fulfill their interests and satisfy their curiosities by enrolling in a wide variety of electives. Thornton's academic curriculum is constantly enriched with new courses, as teachers are encouraged to find new ways to challenge students and to develop new classes along the way.

Academic offerings are supported not by faculty and staff alone, but by Thornton's physical learning environment as well. Thornton Academy's arts wing, constructed in 1996, has multiple studios, including visual arts, theater, music and television. Thornton's arts program also boasts renovated studios for black and white photography and dance. Likewise, technology and business courses are supported five full-class computer laboratories housing Macintosh and Windows platforms.
