Mary Weymouth Hyde Library

Our mission: "To help students become Lifelong learners and to support the instructional objectives of the faculty by providing print, non-print, Internet resources and related professional services."

About the Library
The Mary Weymouth Hyde Library is a 6,000-square-foot facility built in 1996 as part of a larger complex that includes a 500-seat auditorium, arts department, cafeteria, and math classroom wing. The library seats 62 students and has 30 laptop and 12 desktop computers connected to the Internet. The collection includes 16,700 books, and over 600 video tapes.

The reference collection is specifically designed to support the instructional objectives of the teaching faculty. During the first two months of the school year at Thornton Academy, all sixth grade and ninth students receive a comprehensive introduction to the library. Specific areas covered are: how to use the online public access catalog: how to formulate a search strategy; how to search InfoNet, a state wide database that includes 54 separate databases; how to access and use print resources effectively; issues with copyright and plagiarism and how to conduct research and cite resources correctly.

The James C. MacCampbell Award was presented to the Thornton Academy Library Media Center by the State Board of Education for Exemplary Library Programs on May 18, 1998.

There are many research resources available at Thornton Academy through the Mary Weymouth Hyde Library.
